Presentation: How to Protect Our Focus
Presentation: How to Protect Our Focus
Good morning/afternoon, everyone.
Today, I would like to talk about something that is very important for every student—focus.
My topic is “How to Protect Our Focus.”
Let me begin with a simple question:
How long can you study without checking your phone?
Ten minutes? Twenty minutes? Thirty minutes?
Sometimes, we sit at our desks intending to study for one hour. But after a few minutes, we hear a notification. We check our phone. Then we see a message. We open social media. We watch a short video. Before we know it, thirty minutes have passed.
This is one of the biggest challenges students face today.
The good news is that focus is not something that we either have or do not have. Focus is a skill that we can train and protect. (Colorful World)
1. Understand the Value of Your Attention
First, we need to understand that our attention is limited.
Think of your attention like money.
If you spend a little money everywhere, eventually you may have nothing left for the things that really matter.
The same is true of our attention.
If we constantly give our attention to notifications, short videos, unnecessary conversations, games, and social media, we have less attention available for studying, creating, and solving important problems.
So, every morning, ask yourself:
“What deserves my attention today?”
If your answer is mathematics, English, an examination, a project, or an important personal goal, give those things your attention first.
2. Remove Distractions Before You Begin
The second way to protect our focus is to remove distractions before we start.
Don't wait until you are distracted to solve the problem.
For example, before studying:
Put your phone away.
Turn off unnecessary notifications.
Close unrelated browser tabs.
Organize your desk.
Prepare the books and materials you need.
Tell other people that you need some quiet time.
We should not depend only on willpower.
Instead, we should design our environment so that focusing becomes easier.
If your phone is beside your book, you may want to check it.
But if your phone is in another room, checking it becomes more difficult.
Sometimes, changing our environment is easier than fighting against distraction.
3. Stop Multitasking
The third point is stop multitasking.
Many students believe they can study while checking messages, watching videos, chatting with friends, and listening to entertainment.
It may feel productive, but constantly switching between activities makes concentration more difficult.
Instead, try single-tasking.
Choose one task and give it your full attention.
For example, don't say:
“I will study mathematics while checking Facebook.”
Say:
“For the next 30 minutes, I will only study mathematics.”
When you finish, move to the next task.
Remember:
Deep attention is more powerful than divided attention. (Colorful World)
4. Control Your Smartphone
Now let's talk about one of the biggest distractions in modern life: the smartphone.
A smartphone is not necessarily our enemy.
It can be a wonderful learning tool. We can use it to read books, watch educational videos, search for information, practice languages, and communicate.
The problem begins when we stop controlling the phone and the phone starts controlling us.
So, create some rules.
You can:
Turn off unnecessary notifications.
Keep your phone out of reach while studying.
Check social media only at planned times.
Remove distracting apps from your home screen.
Use Focus or Do Not Disturb mode.
Avoid using your phone during study sessions.
The goal is simple:
Use your phone when you choose to—not whenever it demands your attention. (Colorful World)
5. Use Short Periods of Deep Focus
Another important idea is that we don't need to concentrate for five hours continuously.
If you are not used to focusing for a long time, start small.
For example:
30 minutes of focused study, followed by a 5-minute break.
Then repeat.
As your ability improves, you can gradually increase your focused periods.
The exact number of minutes is not the most important thing.
The important thing is learning to stay with one task without constantly escaping to another activity. (Colorful World)
6. Take Meaningful Breaks
But remember—breaks are important too.
However, a break should refresh your brain, not create another distraction.
During a break, you can:
Stand up and stretch.
Drink some water.
Walk outside.
Look away from the screen.
Take a few deep breaths.
Relax your eyes.
Be careful with social media.
You may tell yourself:
“I'll check my phone for five minutes.”
But five minutes can easily become thirty or forty-five minutes.
So make your breaks meaningful.
7. Protect Your Sleep
Another important factor is sleep.
A tired brain struggles to concentrate.
When students stay up late using their phones, they may find it more difficult to focus the next day.
So, develop a consistent sleep routine.
Try to:
Go to bed at a regular time.
Avoid unnecessary screen use before bed.
Keep your phone away from your pillow.
Make your sleeping environment comfortable.
Give yourself enough time to rest.
Sometimes, the best way to improve tomorrow's focus is to sleep well tonight. (Colorful World)
8. Train Your Attention
Focus becomes stronger when we practice it.
Just as athletes train their bodies, we can train our attention.
We can practice by:
Reading a book without checking our phones.
Solving puzzles.
Drawing.
Writing.
Playing a musical instrument.
Practicing mindfulness.
Learning a difficult new skill.
Start small.
If you can concentrate for ten minutes today, try fifteen minutes tomorrow.
Little by little, your attention becomes stronger. (Colorful World)
9. Set Clear Goals
It is difficult to focus when we don't know exactly what we want to accomplish.
For example, don't simply say:
“I will study tonight.”
Instead, say:
“I will read Chapter 4 and answer questions 1 to 20.”
That's a much clearer goal.
Before starting your study session, ask yourself:
“What exactly do I want to finish?”
A clear goal gives your brain a destination. (Colorful World)
10. Write Down Distracting Thoughts
Sometimes our phone isn't the problem.
Our own thoughts can distract us.
While studying, you may suddenly think:
“I need to reply to my friend.”
“I should watch that video.”
“I need to buy something tomorrow.”
Instead of immediately stopping your study, write the thought down.
Keep a small notebook nearby and make a “later list.”
Then return to your work.
This teaches your brain:
“I don't have to deal with everything immediately.” (Colorful World)
11. Protect Yourself from Information Overload
Today, we receive an enormous amount of information.
News, videos, advertisements, messages, social media posts, games, and online discussions are constantly competing for our attention.
But we don't need to consume everything.
We can choose what deserves our attention.
Ask yourself:
“Is this information useful to me?”
If the answer is no, perhaps you don't need it.
A quieter information environment gives our minds more space to think.
12. Spend Time Without a Screen
Not every free moment needs to be filled with digital entertainment.
Sometimes, put your phone away.
Go for a walk.
Read a book.
Talk with your family.
Play a sport.
Draw.
Think.
Observe nature.
Or simply sit quietly.
Silence and boredom are not always problems.
Sometimes, they give our minds an opportunity to think, imagine, and create. (Colorful World)
13. Learn to Say “No”
Protecting our focus sometimes means saying “No.”
We may need to say no to:
Endless scrolling.
Unnecessary notifications.
Constant chatting.
Unimportant activities.
Interruptions during study time.
Things that do not support our goals.
Remember this powerful idea:
Every time you say “no” to a distraction, you are saying “yes” to something more important. (Colorful World)
14. Focus on the Present Task
Sometimes we lose focus because we are thinking about the past or worrying about the future.
For example:
“What if I fail the exam?”
Or:
“Why did I make that mistake yesterday?”
These thoughts use our mental energy.
Instead, ask yourself:
“What can I do right now?”
We cannot change everything that happened yesterday.
We cannot control everything that will happen tomorrow.
But we can control what we do during the next few minutes.
So, focus on the task in front of you.
15. Give Yourself a Reason to Focus
Finally, know why you are doing something.
Studying mathematics may feel boring if you see it only as homework.
But perhaps you are studying mathematics because you want to become an engineer.
Reading may feel difficult if you see it only as an assignment.
But perhaps reading will help you become a better communicator.
Connect today's effort with tomorrow's goal.
When you have a strong purpose, concentration becomes easier. (Colorful World)
Conclusion
Ladies and gentlemen,
We live in a world full of distractions.
Our phones, social media, games, messages, videos, and countless other things are constantly competing for our attention.
But protecting our focus does not mean avoiding technology completely.
It means learning to control our attention instead of allowing distractions to control us.
So remember:
Remove unnecessary distractions.
Control your smartphone.
Study one task at a time.
Take meaningful breaks.
Sleep well.
Train your attention.
Set clear goals.
Protect your mind from information overload.
And most importantly, remember:
Your attention shapes your life.
What you repeatedly give your attention to becomes what you learn, what you practice, and eventually what you become. (Colorful World)
So, starting today:
Protect your focus.
Protect your attention.
Protect your time.
Protect your future.
Thank you for listening.
(Colorful World)
Social Media
Focus Mode သို့မဟုတ် Do Not Disturb Mode အသုံးပြုပါ။
Screen
Puzzle
Notice → Return → Continue
Smartphone
Attention
Information Overload
(Colorful World)
